Over recent years, one of Amarillo's most notable construction projects was the new Hodgetown Baseball Stadium. Home to the Sod Poodles, this minor-league baseball stadium also functions as a multi-purpose event venue and attracts thousands of visitors each season.
But building the stadium wasn’t an easy task to handle. The stadium needed to be completed in time for the first baseball game of April 2019.
Our team was under intense pressure to ensure the steel erection was done quickly and correctly—and the entire city was watching.
The team at Caprock Building Systems went above and beyond to keep the project on schedule, even increasing our manpower (which was not originally in the budget). The stunning stadium opened its doors right on time and has been one of Amarillo’s biggest attractions ever since.
Siemens Energy, a German-based company, reached out to Caprock to create a Synchronous Condenser Building. This building would contain a massive generator that helps stabilize the energy network through voltage recovery during faults.
Our team functioned as Siemens’ building contractor, handling concrete, building, and interior works. The problem: The condenser needed to be built in the middle of a desolate area. Working in this location was a logistical nightmare. Not only did our team face extreme heat, but maintaining consistent communication with the client proved to be a significant challenge.
Fortunately, our hard work paid off. We completed the synchronous condenser building without any hiccups. Siemens went on to do five additional synchronous condenser projects with Caprock, and we’re thrilled with how the work turned out.
West Texas A&M University has expanded to provide students with advanced veterinary training and practical experience. This includes a new WT Horse Center, which needed to contain classrooms, conference rooms, and coaching offices. The university reached out to Caprock to provide and erect a steel building to support their facility's needs.
The lift plan for the building was unlike any we had handled before. The building had a high pitch and required many manhours in the air working out of aerial lifts. To keep employees safe and limit hours working high in the air, Caprock built the main structure on the ground and hung it with cranes. The strategy worked without a hitch!
The equestrian center is now home to the West Texas A&M University equestrian team, the WT Equine Industry program, the Horse Judging team, the Stock Horse team, and Horseman’s Association. The Lady Buffs finished fifth overall at the 2022 IHSA National Championship in Western competition and have enjoyed a strong history of success at their home facility.
As one of the primary United States nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facilities, the Pantex Nuclear Plant in Amarillo is dedicated to keeping residents and the country safe. They partnered with Caprock to take down and eliminate three old buildings at the plant that were deemed excess to the plant’s needs.
In addition to the de-erection of three office buildings, the scope of work included removal of underground utilities, removal of surface features including building pads, concrete approach pads, and regrading and revegetation of the site.
Working in a high-security, high-safety environment inside a nuclear power plant was certainly a challenge. Our team started by developing a plan to take each building down safely with minimal disruptions to the Pantex employees working nearby. We completed the demolition project on time with an excellent rating from the Pantex Project Manager.
Located 50 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas, the Phillips 66 Petroleum Plant in Borger, Texas, is one of the nation’s most technologically advanced facilities. When they decided to build a new crude flex equipment facility inside the plant, they had high expectations for the quality and dependability of the steel construction. Caprock Building Systems was a natural choice.
Caprock was hired by a General Contractor that had never worked on the Phillips 66 plant previously. Their struggles became our struggles. Our team had to throw additional resources to meet the project delivery date. Additionally, we had to work at night under light towers due to high winds during the day.
In the end, we completed the project to the satisfaction of Phillips 66 Major Projects Division. The new steel equipment building reflects the plant’s dedication to innovation and efficiency.
